India's Electronics Industry Soars: Optiemus Electronics Opens World-Class Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility
In a significant stride towards self-reliance and global recognition, Optiemus Electronics, in collaboration with US-based Corning Incorporated, has inaugurated India's first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Noida. The facility, now operational, will produce high-quality tempered glass under the globally recognised brand "Engineered by Corning".
This move marks another milestone in India's journey towards becoming a leading player in electronics manufacturing. The electronics industry in India has grown six times over the past 11 years, reaching a production value of Rs 11.5 lakh crore with exports of over Rs 3 lakh crore.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inaugurated the facility, emphasised the importance of indigenous tempered glass manufacturing for mobile phones in the success of 'Make in India' and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. He also announced India's plans to manufacture every component used in mobile phones, including chips and cover glasses, aiming to position the country as a world player in electronics manufacturing.
The electronics ecosystem in India is rapidly developing, with value addition being enhanced step by step. The government's focus on research and development is evident, with its pledge to enhance India's design strength, highlighted as its biggest asset.
Pankaj Mahindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), stated that the high labor-intensive manufacturing process of tempered glass presents a significant opportunity for India to meet domestic demand and become a leading exporter. In fact, Indian manufacturers are already exporting equipment of the highest global quality standards to European countries in the Railways sector.
The success of this facility is a testament to India's potential in the global electronics market. Notably, an IIT Madras-incubated startup has designed India's first microcontroller, which will soon be deployed in Indian products.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called upon the youth to contribute to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, as the world looks towards India with great expectations. The country's GDP growth of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of financial year 2025-26 demonstrates the country's stability, vibrancy, and innovation-driven economy.
The products from this facility will be supplied to both domestic and international markets, further boosting India's presence in the global electronics market. With such strides, India is well on its way to becoming a significant player in the global electronics industry.
