India and Ukraine Discuss Peace Efforts Ahead of PM Modi's Meeting with Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India had a telephone conversation with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, 28th August, just days before his scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO Summit in China. This conversation marked the second telephonic conversation between the two leaders in August.

During the discussion, PM Modi reaffirmed India's steadfast and consistent position for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. He also reiterated India's commitment to extend all possible support for the earliest restoration of peace. Zelensky, in response, confirmed the productive and important nature of the conversation, sharing a shared vision on achieving real peace.

Zelensky also briefed PM Modi on his recent conversation with US President Donald Trump in Washington, alongside European leaders, which revolved around Russia's war on Ukraine and a possible ceasefire. The discussion between Zelensky and the European leaders focused on the same issues.

On August 18, Zelensky had a conversation with several European leaders, including those from the European Union. In this conversation, the need for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia was emphasised, with Zelensky stating that his country's position is "understood and supported by everyone."

In a significant development, 26 countries, including members of the European Union and others aligned in the "coalition of the willing," spoke by phone regarding the Ukraine conflict situation in August 2025.

Zelensky also shared his perspective on the recent developments related to the Ukraine conflict during the conversation with PM Modi. He reiterated Ukraine's readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia. According to Zelensky, India is ready to make necessary efforts and deliver an appropriate signal to Russia and other leaders during the meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

PM Modi thanked Zelensky for his call and confirmed India's support to restore peace between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine, in turn, reaffirmed its readiness for such a meeting.

This conversation between the two leaders comes at a critical juncture, with the SCO Summit providing a platform for international discussions on various global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
