India's Piyush Goyal Advocates for a Twin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Construction Approach in the Country
In a significant move towards electromobility, Piyush Goyal, the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, proposed the development of battery swapping and charging stations infrastructure in India. This initiative was discussed during a joint press conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
Goyal emphasised the importance of collaboration between various government departments, including the ministries of Heavy Industry, Power, Petroleum & Natural Gas, and Housing & Urban Affairs, for successful implementation of battery swapping infrastructure. He highlighted that this infrastructural development should be considered a "people's movement" to make Electric Vehicles (EVs) more accessible for all.
Goyal suggested the installation of charging and battery swapping facilities at all existing fuel stations in India. This approach, he believed, would help prevent vandalism while ensuring widespread access to EV infrastructure.
Experts in the field noted that the development of battery swapping infrastructure should not be half-baked. They stressed the need for equal emphasis on fixed-battery EV manufacturers. The sector is expected to reach a valuation of $20 billion by 2030, primarily driven by numerous technological developments, including robots that can replace batteries in just under two minutes.
Safety concerns were one of the key topics of discussion among the manufacturers. Improved accountability measures for battery safety were emphasised by the stakeholders, with a call for clear standards from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regarding battery safety.
Among the attendees at the meeting were Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies, SUN Mobility, TVS Motor Company, Ather Energy, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Hero MotoCorp, and Bajaj Auto.
The minister's proposal was met with enthusiasm from the industry players, who recognised the potential of this initiative to revolutionise the automotive sector in India. As the country moves towards a more sustainable future, the focus on battery swapping infrastructure is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
