Individual meets tragic end by driving car into Biloxi pier, close to the casino, as investigation continues
In a tragic incident, a 67-year-old man named Paul Costello from Milton, Florida, lost his life on December 30, 2024, in Biloxi, Mississippi. The accident occurred around 9 p.m. local time on the Biloxi Fishing Pier.
Paul was in town with his family during the holidays when the unfortunate event took place. According to reports, he mistook the pier for a bridge and drove his vehicle off the structure.
The Biloxi Fishing Pier, located just south of the Palace Casino Resort at E. Howard Ave., extends almost 5,000 feet into the Biloxi Back Bay near the Biloxi Bay Bridge/U.S. Highway 90. The pier, formally known as the Point Cadet Fishing Pier, opened on April 30, 2013, and replaced a popular fishing pier destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
At the time of the accident, only Paul was in the vehicle. The county coroner's office will perform a toxicology report to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
The pier, a tight two-lane vehicle-accessible pier with only one turnaround area before the end of the jetty, did not have any warning signs for motorists approaching the end of the structure prior to the incident. Available measures for warning include installing clear motor vehicle prohibition signs, speed limit signs, physical barriers to prevent vehicle access, and flashing warning lights to alert drivers before entering the pier.
Distractions such as fishermen standing alongside the road and the captivating water views could potentially distract drivers on the Biloxi Fishing Pier.
The Biloxi Fishing Pier is not only a popular destination for anglers but also a great place for fishing redfish. Redfish can grow large in Biloxi Bay, and the marshes and vegetation in the area provide good eating, hiding, and spawning for these fish. The Half Shell Oyster House on Lameuse St. near Hard Rock is known for its Royal Redfish specialty.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing, and a tow truck with a crane was brought onto the pier to recover Costello's vehicle.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Paul Costello during this difficult time. This incident serves as a reminder to exercise caution and stay alert while driving, especially in unfamiliar areas.
