Individual succumbs in NYPD custody at Brooklyn's criminal court, officials declare
In a tragic turn of events, a 29-year-old man named Ardit Billa was found unresponsive in his cell at Rikers Island's Kings County Criminal Court on Friday night. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m., and emergency services responded to the scene, but they were unable to revive the man.
The identity of the deceased will be released by the police once the family has been notified. Unfortunately, this is not the first such incident this year. Back in March, 32-year-old Soso Ramishvili of Brooklyn died in a holding cell at the same location, 120 Schermerhorn Street.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is yet to determine the cause of Ardit Billa's death, and an investigation is ongoing regarding the incident. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division will lead the investigation as Ardit Billa was in police custody at the time of the incident.
Three Department of Correction staffers have been suspended in connection with Ardit Billa's death. The previous version of this story incorrectly stated the number of people who have died in city custody.
Soso Ramishvili was detained for three days following a shoplifting arrest before his death. The cause of Soso's death is also yet to be determined.
This unfortunate series of events has raised concerns about the conditions and treatment of individuals in police custody. The city and the police department are urged to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both Ardit Billa and Soso Ramishvili during this difficult time.
