In a groundbreaking development, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) has chosen Indra, a leading technology provider, to manage its toll payment systems for connected vehicles. This decision marks the first time that C-V2X tolling technology will be integrated into a highway in the United States, on the I-485 Express Lanes in North Carolina.

Roadside sensors will be installed to detect various events, such as wrong-way drivers, stopped vehicles, pedestrians on the roadway, or slow-moving traffic. These detected events will be immediately broadcast to connected vehicles using C-V2X, enhancing roadway safety. This eliminates the need for mobile applications or additional devices for toll payments.

Indra's 3D LiDAR perception and processing technology will be combined with C-V2X for real-time traffic analysis. This technology, which has been successfully tested in the US through Indra's collaboration with Audi and Qualcomm Technologies, is expected to lead to a standardization of toll payments and potentially reduce congestion on toll roads.

RaΓΊl Ripio, senior vice president of mobility & technology at Indra, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating that it leads to disruptive technologies benefiting transportation operators, mobility, and travelers. Indra's technology is trusted by the NCTA to deliver a superior customer experience.

The C-V2X infrastructure for tolling will also be utilized to improve road safety. For instance, connected vehicles will receive tolling information directly through their in-vehicle systems, allowing them to adjust their speed and route in real-time to avoid congestion.

The I-485 Express Lanes project is just the beginning for Indra's connected vehicle tolling solution. The technology could pave the way for similar implementations on other toll roads, potentially revolutionizing the way we travel.

For those interested in learning more about tolling and road pricing, the Road Pricing Summit is an annual forum featuring a comprehensive agenda, high-level speakers, and exclusive networking opportunities. Registration is currently available for this event.

Stay tuned for updates on Indra's connected vehicle tolling solution and its impact on road safety and travel efficiency.
