New MG HS Super Hybrid Essence Arrives in Australia

The second-generation MG HS Super Hybrid Essence, a five-seat medium SUV, has made its debut in Australia, boasting a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system that MG calls a Super Hybrid.

This new model comes equipped with a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined power output of 220kW/350Nm. The MG HS Super Hybrid Essence is smaller than some key rivals, with dimensions of 4670mm long, 1890mm wide, 1663mm tall, and a wheelbase of 2766mm.

The MG HS Super Hybrid Essence has a battery capacity of 24.7kWh (23.2kWh usable), allowing for an impressive EV-only range of 120km (WLTP). MG claims that the vehicle can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 6.8 seconds.

The MG HS Super Hybrid Essence is packed with features, including a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, fake leather seat trim, driver's seat power lumbar and memory, front passenger-seat power, heating for both front seats, eight-speaker audio, and an updated infotainment screen with USB-C ports.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the MG HS Super Hybrid Essence is currently showing consumption averages of 2.3L/100km and 10.8kWh/100km. The vehicle also comes with a trip computer that estimates EV range and shows consumption averages.

However, the MG HS Super Hybrid Essence does not have a spare tyre. It's also worth noting that the screen requires specific finger placement for swiping to access certain functions.

Despite these features, the MG HS Super Hybrid Essence has faced some issues. There have been reports of the vehicle stalling in slow traffic with a depleted battery, despite having enough fuel for the petrol engine.

The MG HS Super Hybrid Essence is priced at $54,990 drive-away and is covered by a 10-year/250,000km warranty. The MG HS Super Hybrid PHEV and Super Hybrid models are due in MG showrooms around September 2025.

MG is planning a long country drive to test the Australian-specific software and potentially cross the 1000km barrier without recharging or refueling. This will provide a better understanding of the vehicle's capabilities in real-world conditions.

The MG HS Super Hybrid Essence, with its blend of performance, features, and efficiency, is set to challenge the established players in the medium SUV segment. However, it's important to consider the reported issues and the vehicle's specific requirements before making a purchase decision.
