In Cologne, the German national team is gearing up for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland on Sunday at 20:45 CET/RTL. The match will be a significant opportunity for the team to bounce back from their disappointing opening defeat in Bratislava.

The team, under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann, is facing a need for change in their offense, with key players like Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, and Tim Kleindienst absent. However, the young talent Florian Wirtz, despite a form struggle since his move to FC Liverpool, remains an important player for Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann has hinted at potential personnel changes for the upcoming match, but has also stated that only some, not all, field players will be rotated. One player who could see more action is Nick Woltemade, who is still waiting for his first international goal and is particularly in the spotlight.

Pascal GroรŸ is expected to start on the right side, with Joshua Kimmich staying in midfield. The return of Mats Hummels to form could strengthen the wobbly German defense, providing a much-needed boost. Hummels, a key figure in the 2014 German World Cup-winning team, will be honoured by the DFB for his services before the game.

The team is also set to honour Jens Lehmann and Michael Ballack before the match. Rudi Vรถller, sporting director of the German national team, praised Hummels as a "leader" and "figurehead" in advance of the honoring. An emotional player like Robert Andrich could now be called upon to play alongside Kimmich.

Oliver Baumann, goalkeeper for the German national team, emphasized the importance of "energy, tackling, and winning second balls" after the "lifeless" performance in Slovakia. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, called for "emotional football" and "energetic togetherness" for the second group match.

The match against Northern Ireland is the second group match for the German national team. Despite the challenges, Nagelsmann expressed a desire to improve Germany's performance and secure a much-needed victory.
