Institute Staff Honored for Their Achievements
In the realm of dentistry and cancer research, several notable figures have made significant strides recently.
Dr. Mohammed Baig, a distinguished alumnus of EIOH's Oral Medicine Department (Prostho '11) and GenDen '13, has been elected to the International Academy for Dental Facial Esthetics. The Academy recognised Dr. Baig's service and devotion to advancing the various arts of esthetics in dentistry and medicine.
Meanwhile, Dr. David Fraser, a graduate of both the Perio '17 and MS '17 programmes, has received a Trainee Pilot Study through the University of Rochester's Clinical & Translational Science Institute. Additionally, Dr. Fraser was awarded the Joan Wright Goodman Fellowship, the University of Rochester's most competitive dissertation fellowship.
Unfortunately, there are no search results indicating a researcher involved in a recent study on the broadening of the extent of oral mucositis and oral ulcerative toxicities from cancer therapies published specifically in "CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians." However, a study titled "The broadening scope of oral mucositis and oral ulcerative mucosal toxicities of anticancer therapies" has been published in the journal. This paper presents current knowledge about the epidemiology, pathogenesis, assessment, risk prediction, and intervention strategies for oral mucositis and other ulcerative mucosal toxicities due to both conventional and evolving forms of cancer therapy.
Dr. Sharon Elad's research on oral mucositis and oral ulcerative mucosal toxicities was published in the same journal, with an impact factor of 508.72. It's worth noting that oral mucositis is a common, highly symptomatic complication of cancer therapy that can impact patients' function, quality of life, and ability to tolerate treatment. In certain cancer patients, oral mucositis is associated with increased mortality.
On a positive note, Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud was awarded a Research Award for his study "Immediate Loading of Dental Implants Supporting Mandibular Overdenture in Type II Diabetic Patients" at the American Prosthodontics Society annual meeting.
Lastly, Dr. Konstantinos Chochlidakis was elected as one of the five councilors of the American Prosthodontics Society Executive Council.
Oral mucosal toxicities are also reported in targeted and immune check-point inhibitors therapies, highlighting the need for continued research in this area. The advancements made by these researchers underscore the importance of ongoing study and collaboration in dental and cancer research.
