Intense Carnage in Gaza City: 15 Deaths Recorded a Day After Israel Halts Daily Aid Interruptions
In a series of airstrikes on Saturday, the Israeli military targeted a significant figure believed to be a key member of Hamas, according to their statement. The attacks resulted in at least 44 deaths, with the majority occurring in two separate incidents in Gaza City.
The strikes came a day after Israel ended a policy of pausing its attacks for several hours daily to facilitate humanitarian relief. This pause, intended to allow for the delivery of aid and medical supplies, was a brief respite amidst the ongoing conflict.
The first incident, which took place in the heart of Gaza City, resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people. The target of this attack was reportedly Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades. However, it remains unclear if Abu Obeida, who is known only by his nom de guerre and whose real identity remains a mystery, was indeed killed in the attack.
Three Israeli officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the attack was aimed at Abu Obeida. The Qassam Brigades' spokesperson frequently appears in videos disseminated by Hamas, always masked. Reports suggest that he was killed during Israeli operations around August 30, 2025, though Hamas has neither confirmed nor denied this, labelling the reports as part of Israeli psychological warfare.
A second strike, near a bakery in Gaza City, claimed the lives of an additional 12 people, according to Mohammad Abu Salmiya, the director of Al Shifa hospital in the city. The information about this second strike could not be independently verified. At least five people were also killed in the attack in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the second strike.
This escalation in violence comes amidst ongoing tensions in the region, with both sides accusing the other of violating ceasefires and engaging in provocative actions. The international community has called for a de-escalation of the situation and a return to negotiations to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
