Intense heat to persist until Sunday's arrival.
Spain is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures set to soar in the northeastern peninsula and the southwest over the next few days.
According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), regions in southern and southwestern Spain such as Andalusia, including the Guadalquivir valley near Seville and the Guadalhorce valley near Costa del Sol, Navarra, Castilla-La Mancha, and areas along the Júcar and Segura rivers are expected to experience extreme heat. The Valencian Community inland coastal areas could also see highs around 39 to 40°C.
The heatwave is expected to continue until at least Wednesday, with cooling beginning on Thursday, signaling the end of the heatwave. Some areas, particularly the Guadalquivir and Guadiana, may see temperatures exceed 42°C on Wednesday and Thursday.
The high insolation of the season will contribute to the heatwave, with thermometers marking between 38 and 40°C in the main depressions of the northeastern peninsula and the southwest during these days.
AEMET has updated its special warning, stating that the thermal rise in the northern half of the peninsula, particularly the eastern Cantabrian region, is expected to result in a heatwave episode on Thursday. The agency warns that all possible precautions should be taken to avoid the worst consequences of the heatwave, including hydration, avoiding sun exposure, and protecting the most vulnerable.
Minimum temperatures will not drop below 23-25°C in some areas of the center and south of the peninsula, as well as around the Mediterranean coast. The temperature trend in the Canary Islands will be rising from today until Wednesday, but the heatwave criterion is not expected to be met in the archipelago.
The synoptic configuration associated with the heatwave will be stationary, with high Atlantic pressures extending over much of the territory and low pressures in the southwestern peninsula. Until the situation changes, we will continue to experience tropical temperatures sporadically for several days.
The extraordinary heatwave warning continues to be in effect for the peninsula, and AEMET expects significantly high temperatures in most of the peninsula, although there will be notable drops in regions of the north. The heatwave will likely continue at least until the weekend.
Despite the severe heatwave, the temperature trend in the Canary Islands will be rising from today until Wednesday, but the heatwave criterion is not expected to be met in the archipelago. The heatwave currently battering the peninsula will continue until next Sunday.
