Intense rainfall predicted for Thailand on Sunday and Monday
Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected to Sweep Across Thailand
A low-pressure system, previously known as Storm Nongfa, is set to bring heavy rainfall to various regions in Thailand from Sunday to Monday. The system is expected to move through the monsoon trough across the North and Northeast of the country on Sunday.
In the northeast, several provinces will be affected, including Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Chaiyaphum, and Khon Kaen. Additionally, the provinces of Loei, Bueng Kan, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani may also experience heavy rainfall.
Heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding are expected across Thailand, particularly in the northern and northeastern provinces. The regions in Thailand affected by heavy rainfall from Sunday to Monday include Bangkok and its surroundings, as well as the eastern provinces of Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat, where particularly strong rains and flooding are expected, especially in low-lying areas and along waterways.
Northern and northeastern areas, along with parts of the south and the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea coasts, will experience heavy rain and high waves, contributing to flood risks and dangerous conditions for boats. Strong winds are generating waves 2-3 metres high in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, rising above 3 metres during thundershowers.
In the south, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, and Krabi may experience heavy rainfall. No new provinces in the central region were mentioned to be affected beyond the ones already mentioned.
In the north, the affected provinces include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun. Coastal residents along the eastern seaboard and the upper western coast of the South have been warned to watch for possible storm surges from Sunday through Tuesday.
Specifically, very heavy rains are likely in Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, lower Nan, Phrae, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Tak, and Mae Hong Son in the north and northeast.
In the central region, Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi are expected to be affected, while in the east, the affected provinces are Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
The Meteorological Department has advised all vessels to proceed with caution and avoid storm areas, while small boats in these regions should remain ashore. People face knee-deep floodwater in Lom Kao district, Phetchabun, as the Pa Sak River overflows due to water deluges from Loei province on Sunday.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
