Intensified Israeli attacks on Gaza City lead to rising humanitarian crisis

In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, the situation remains dire. The Gaza health ministry reported that 48 people were killed in Israeli strikes on August 29, marking a significant escalation in violence. This follows the Hamas-led attack in October 2023, which resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 people in Israel.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is deepening, with the number of starvation-related deaths since the war began standing at 322, according to the Gaza health ministry. The global hunger monitor, backed by UN agencies, has assessed that famine has taken hold in Gaza, but Israel has rejected this assessment.

Footage from our website shows rows of bodies in white shrouds outside Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital, and relatives are weeping beside the dead. The situation at the hospital has not changed significantly since the previous reporting. The Gaza health ministry also reported five deaths due to malnutrition in the past 24 hours.

Amidst this chaos, there was a glimmer of hope as the Israeli military announced the recovery of hostage Ilan Weiss, a member of an emergency team who was seized by Hamas during their attack on October 7, 2023. Ilan Weiss was killed by Hamas on the day of the massacre, and his body was later recovered by the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Prime Minister's office made the announcement about the recovery of Ilan Weiss's body.

However, the Israeli military's tactical pause does not apply to Gaza City, deemed a dangerous combat zone. The Israeli military has increased operations around Gaza City on August 29, and the Israeli military is also intensifying operations on the outskirts of Gaza City. The Israeli military has ended temporary pauses that allowed aid deliveries.

In addition, the Israeli military has recovered the remains of a second individual, but their identity has not been immediately identified. The total number of people taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack in October 2023, according to Israeli figures, was around 250.

As the conflict continues, both sides urge for a swift resolution to end the bloodshed and alleviate the suffering of the civilians caught in the crossfire.
