FIBA Takes Action Against Racist Incident at Eurobasket Game

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has taken action against a racist incident that occurred during Germany's Eurobasket game against Lithuania in Tampere, Finland. The incident involved racist chants directed at Dennis Schröder, the German national team captain.

Following an immediate review of the incident, which included the review of video footage from the arena's security cameras, FIBA has identified the suspect responsible for the racist heckling. The individual has been banned from attending any further Eurobasket 2022 games.

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) had alerted security about two individuals making monkey noises during the game. Schröder himself reported the incident to MagentaSport, stating that some Lithuanian fans made monkey noises at halftime.

FIBA has also contacted the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them of the situation. In addition, the organisation plans to support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games.

According to the statement released by FIBA, racism has no place in the sport. The statement further emphasised that such incidents undermine the core values of sportsmanship and fair play.

No new information was provided about the status of the ban on the previously identified suspect or the potential consequences for the two ejected individuals. However, it is clear that FIBA is committed to addressing and eradicating racism from the sport.

Schröder himself has spoken out against the incident, stating that monkey noises are a step too far and that racism has no place in the sport. The incident took place after Germany's win over Lithuania in Eurobasket, but it has cast a shadow over the victory.

FIBA has provided local authorities with relevant footage and information regarding the incident, demonstrating their commitment to tackling racism in sport. The organisation's actions serve as a reminder that racism has no place in any walk of life, and that everyone has a role to play in creating a more inclusive and respectful world.
