International Gathering at SCO Summit 2025: Warm Reception for Modi from Indian Community in China, Significant Discussions Await with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin

In the heart of Tianjin, China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, marking his first visit to China in nearly eight years. This summit, attended by leaders from 20 countries including Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Shehbaz Sharif, comes at a crucial time for India, following the recent imposition of a 50% tariff by US President Donald Trump.

The SCO comprises 10 members and multiple dialogue partners and observers. Besides the aforementioned leaders, the conference will include representatives of 10 organizations such as the UN and ASEAN, with participation from member states like Belarus, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and observer and dialogue partner states such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, among others.

India and China have taken several steps to improve their bilateral ties in recent months. The resumption of trade through several key routes and the agreement to resume direct flight connectivity are significant strides in this direction. Modi is expected to hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Summit, and live coverage of their meeting is available for follow-up.

Modi's visit to China comes after a downturn in India-US ties triggered by Trump tariffs. The talks between Modi and his Russian and Chinese counterparts have gained significance due to the strained US-India ties. Both India and China have agreed to uphold multilateralism, enhance communication on major international and regional issues, maintain a rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, and promote a multipolar world that safeguards the interests of developing countries.

The upcoming SCO meeting will allow India to emphasize its strategic autonomy and non-alignment with any one power. A notable event at the Summit is the meeting between Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking their first face-to-face encounter since the Pahalgam terror attack. This meeting, taking place at the SCO Summit, is significant in the ongoing efforts to improve India-Pakistan relations.

The SCO Summit in Tianjin is not just a platform for bilateral talks, but also an opportunity for multilateral diplomacy. The leaders will discuss various global issues, aiming to foster a more harmonious and cooperative international environment. As the world grapples with complex geopolitical challenges, the SCO Summit serves as a beacon of hope for collective action and unity.
