International Surgeons Gather at Siegen Diakonie Clinic for AO Fellowships

The Siegen Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling has become a hub for international medical exchange, as it hosts a series of visits from doctors from Japan, India, North Macedonia, and the USA. This prestigious clinic, recognized as an "AO Fellowship Center," offers a unique opportunity for physicians worldwide to further specialize in trauma and reconstructive surgery.

The AO Fellowship Center, an international community of physicians with over 450,000 members worldwide, provides a platform for medical professionals to deepen their knowledge and skills in the field of trauma surgery. The fellowships are aimed at doctors who demonstrate high commitment and expertise and wish to specialize beyond their specialist qualification.

One such fellow is Hem Raj, an orthopedic and trauma surgeon from India, who is currently visiting the clinic for a three-week observation period. He secured the opportunity through an application process and is fully integrated into the team and daily work, accompanying operations, ward rounds, and treatments.

The department of trauma and reconstructive surgery at the Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling has earned a globally significant distinction by meeting the necessary criteria of the AO Foundation under Prof. Schröder. The clinic treats severely and critically injured patients as a certified regional trauma center and base for air rescue.

Several hospitals and clinics worldwide offer AO Fellowships similar to the program at Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling. For instance, the Chattanooga Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery Fellowship in the USA provides extensive surgical trauma experience with over 500 surgical cases per year, including complex fractures and polytrauma cases.

In Europe, The Royal London Hospital, known for advanced trauma care and reconstructive surgery training, has awarded AO trauma fellowships. Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo, Brazil, offers fellowships with a focus on arthroplasty, sports medicine, and trauma-related surgeries. Apollo Group of Hospitals in India provides training in arthroscopy, reconstructive surgery, and trauma cases, with an emphasis on complex joint reconstruction and sports-related injuries. MOSC Medical College Hospital in India offers arthroscopy fellowships with a component of trauma and reconstructive surgery.

The AO CMF Global Study Club, an online resource, provides advanced educational resources, workshops, and courses in craniomaxillofacial trauma reconstruction.

Prof. Steffen Schröder, the chief physician at the Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling, emphasizes the importance of international exchange for sharing expert knowledge and enriching his team's work. Many procedures at the clinic are performed using 3D imaging and arthroscopy, ensuring the highest level of care. The knowledge gained during the exchange is intended to be applied and shared in the doctors' home countries.

The exchange program aims to introduce observers to workflows, surgical techniques, and treatment methods in specific areas. Since October 2021, the Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling has been a certified AO Host Center, allowing it to host international surgeons for AO Fellowships. The clinic has hosted visiting doctors since 2020, under the mentorship of Prof. Steffen Schröder.

The doctors' visits are part of an ongoing effort to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing in the field of trauma and reconstructive surgery, benefiting both the Siegen Diakonie Clinic Jung-Stilling and the medical communities from around the world.
