Internet restrictions in Russia have expanded to include access to well-known online services

In a bid to reduce inconvenience for citizens, the Ministry of Digital Development has initiated a pilot program to provide access to popular Russian services during necessary mobile internet shutdowns for security purposes.

The city of Moscow is one of the locations where these disruptions have taken place, with systematic interruptions in mobile internet services in Russian regions being a recurring issue in recent months. However, the exact security reasons for these internet restrictions have not been specified by the ministry.

The pilot program, which has already started, aims to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services such as social networks, marketplaces, navigators, taxi services, delivery services, and supermarkets, even during periods of mobile internet downtime due to security reasons. This special technical solution has been developed in collaboration with telecom operators.

Despite the ongoing pilot phase, the list of services will be updated promptly, according to the Ministry of Digital Development. Notably, the services include the Gosuslugi portal, remote voting platform, websites of the President and Government of Russia, in addition to the aforementioned platforms.

Interestingly, access to these services does not require additional identification or CAPTCHA. The reporter for this article, Natalia Petrova, © RIA "Novy Day", is currently investigating which telecom operators have granted pilot-phase access to the most popular Russian services and websites during internet restrictions.

It is important to note that the primary cause of these disruptions is security measures against Ukrainian drone attacks. The disruptions have been occurring primarily in Russian regions, highlighting the need for such initiatives to ensure continuity of essential services for citizens.

As the pilot program continues, it remains to be seen how effectively it will address the issue of internet disruptions and ensure uninterrupted access to essential services for citizens across Russian regions. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
