In the district of Schwandorf, a significant accident occurred on Saturday afternoon on Regensburger Straße in Maxhütte-Haidhof. The incident involved a driver operating a Hyundai vehicle who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

According to the Burglengenfeld police, the driver had 2.0 promille of alcohol in his system, as confirmed by a breathalyzer test. Despite this, no further details about a potential semi-truck mentioned in related headlines were provided.

The driver veered off the road near Salon Monika and Ludwig-Thoma-Straße, colliding with a ten-centimeter thick tree. The impact was so forceful that it snapped the tree completely. The collision also resulted in the driver hitting a new Audi Quattro parked behind the tree, pushing it forward about five meters.

Upon arrival, the fire department Maxhütte-Winkerling, consisting of 18 active members, closed the Regensburger Straße for approximately 300 meters to clear the debris. Both airbags deployed in the Hyundai during the collision, but the driver was taken to the Burglengenfelder Hospital by the rescue service. However, the driver refused treatment and discharged himself.

Sadly, the Hyundai vehicle was declared a total loss, with the estimated damage to the Audi Quattro being around 2,000 euros. The fire department cleared the accident site, and the road was reopened shortly after.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the importance of staying alert while behind the wheel.
