Introducing the Latest High-Ranking Figure at Leprino, the Globe's Leading Mozzarella Producer
In a significant turn of events for the $3.6 billion cheese giant, Leprino Foods, the reclusive billionaire and founder, James Leprino, passed away at the age of 87. His daughters, Terry Leprino and Gina Vecchiarelli, now own a combined 90% stake in the company, following the family feud lawsuit with cousins who owned the remaining 25%. The lawsuit, which erupted in 2022, resulted in the late Leprino testifying from a wheelchair, with the jury siding with him.
Despite some pressure to move on after the lawsuit, it appears the Leprino daughters want to keep the business private. This was evident when Gina Vecchiarelli and her sister, Terry Leprino, did not attend the ribbon cutting for the new Leprino plant in Lubbock, Texas.
The new plant, a testament to the company's growth and resilience, is projected to create a staggering $10.6 billion in economic impact for Texas. Dan Vecchiarelli, Gina's husband and the current Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Leprino Foods, led the opening of this newest facility. He highlighted the plant's potential impact on the region's dairies during the ceremony.
The plant, expected to receive milk supplies from around 200 milk trucks daily, is also a significant step forward for the global dairy industry. Industry insiders view Leprino as a once-in-a-generation kind of acquisition.
Dan Vecchiarelli, known for his openness to new ideas, welcoming demeanor, and humility, has been making waves within Leprino Foods. His style of communication is more polished than his late father-in-law, who went to work in the family business instead of attending college.
In January, Leprino Foods celebrated its 75th anniversary and pledged to invest $1 billion over the next few years in the Lubbock plant. This investment is expected to double the plant's employment in the next year.
John Osborne, CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance, has known Dan Vecchiarelli since 2019. In a recent statement, Vecchiarelli added that the company's new logo refresh, unveiled in 2023, is a symbol of where the company has been, where it is, and where it's going.
Terry Leprino, apart from her role in the family business, has served as a trustee at Colorado Christian University for over a decade and is the president of the Leprino Foods Foundation. She also holds a master's degree in biblical counseling from Colorado Christian University and a bachelor's degree from Arizona State.
As Leprino Foods embarks on this new chapter, one thing remains clear: the Leprino family's commitment to their business and their community. The company's vision, under Dan Vecchiarelli's leadership, may extend beyond food, signaling an exciting future for this dairy industry titan.
