Expanded Investigation into Alleged Temple Donation Embezzlement

The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of temple donations by former abbot Phra Alongkot Phoolmook and Seksan Sapsubbsakul, also known as "Mor Bee", has been widened by the Thai police. The probe now extends to all implicated parties, including celebrities, influencers, and politicians, without exception.

Investigators already have a significant amount of evidence but are seeking additional financial records. The group under scrutiny includes people said to have direct knowledge of the alleged offences and financial operations.

The police investigations indicate that the financial network of the former abbot of Wat Phrabat Namphu allegedly involved the unlawful use of temple donations connected to Phra Alongkot Phoolmook and Mor Bee. This network functioned like a business enterprise, with staff managing donations and coordinating the flow of money.

Sompong Nakhonthaisong, a former monk and well-known preacher, admitted borrowing 13 million baht from Phra Alongkot during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr. Sompong claimed the money came from Phra Alongkot's personal funds. However, a partial repayment of 5.5 million baht has been made by Mr. Sompong, but no formal loan contract was ever signed.

More witnesses have come forward with information about the case. If it is proven that temple funds were misused for loans, the case could escalate further, as such resources are strictly reserved for religious and public benefit purposes.

Members of the Phutthasathan Lop Buri Sri Suwannaphum Foundation, established by Phra Alongkot, are expected to meet police to provide testimony. Once sufficient evidence has been consolidated, a formal press conference will be held.

Pol Lt Col Siripong Sritula, assistant secretary-general of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, issued a warning about the potential escalation of the case. The estimated damages from the alleged embezzlement are now 10 billion baht, according to Pol Maj Gen Charoonkiat Pankaew. The total losses from the alleged embezzlement, considering nationwide donations, could potentially reach "tens of billions of baht".

It is important to note that no information was provided about the involvement of celebrities, influencers, or politicians in the case beyond the initial statement that indictments will extend to all implicated parties. Similarly, no information was provided about Mr. Sompong providing testimony to the police.

The police are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward and cooperate with the investigation. The public is reminded that the misuse of temple funds is a serious offence and undermines the trust and faith of the community.
