Investigations commenced based on allegations of IS association
In the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main, the trial of Duygu D., a 35-year-old German national, is currently underway. The proceedings are taking place in Courtroom II of the court building E, Hammelsgasse 1, and are being presided over by the 5th Criminal Senate - State Protection Senate - of the court.
The trial began before an unspecified date, with Duygu D. being accused of being a member of a terrorist organization abroad, specifically the Islamic State (IS). The indictment against her was read out on October 10, 2023.
According to the prosecution, Duygu D. voluntarily attended Korankurse of the IS and educated her children according to the views of the organization. She is also said to have attempted to discipline and convert other inmates who had turned away from IS while she was in Camp al-Hawl.
Duygu D. is alleged to have traveled to Syria in March 2015 and married an IS fighter after a brief stay in a guesthouse. During her time in the territory controlled by the terrorist organization, she lived with her "husband" in various places. The search results do not provide specific information about which countries she visited during this period.
After her arrest in March 2019, Duygu D. was held in the detention camps Camp al-Hawl and Camp Roj. Initially, she was held with her two children.
The trial is a significant event, with the defendant, her counsel, two representatives of the Public Prosecutor's Office Frankfurt am Main, and three judges all in attendance. The defendant began to speak about her personal circumstances and the charges against her after the indictment was read out.
The trial is still ongoing at the time of writing, with the next scheduled court dates on September 9, 11, 12, October 6, 14, and 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in Courtroom II of the court building E, Hammelsgasse 1, Frankfurt am Main.
While her "husband" performed guard duties and participated in combat operations, Duygu D. is said to have taken care of the common household and the children born in 2016 and 2018. The chairman of the Senate informed Duygu D. of her rights after the indictment was read out.
It is important to note that this is an ongoing trial, and all parties involved are entitled to a fair and impartial hearing. The outcome of the trial will be determined by the evidence presented and the decisions of the judges.
