In a shocking turn of events, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) has accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. This accusation comes after a military operation by Israel, which began in October 2023 following Hamas attacks.

The IAGS resolution, adopted with a majority of 86% of the members voting, alleges that Israel has committed indiscriminate and deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, residential buildings, and commercial buildings. The IAGS further accuses the Israeli government of denying food, water, medicine, and electricity to people in Gaza, leading to a man-made famine in Gaza City and some neighboring areas, as declared by the International Famine Committee.

The IAGS resolution also refers to a 1948 UN resolution that established criteria for genocide. According to the IAGS, Israel's policy and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide under Article II of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Children are considered a particularly vulnerable group, and their deliberate targeting is seen as evidence of the intent to destroy a group in part. The IAGS also lists deliberate attacks on journalists, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers as part of Israel's alleged crimes.

Israel has rejected the accusation of genocide, justifying its actions as self-defense. No initial statement from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs was available regarding the IAGS resolution. The Israeli government does not recognize the report of the famine in Gaza City and has yet to comment on the IAGS's claims.

The radical Islamic Hamas, which operates in the Gaza Strip, has welcomed the IAGS resolution. Almost all residents of the Gaza Strip have been forced to flee due to the destruction of most buildings in the region. Over 63,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip according to Palestinian figures, with over 143,000 people injured and over 60,000 people killed in Israeli attacks, including over 50,000 children.

The IAGS resolution also states that the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which started the war, also constitutes international crimes according to the IAGS. This resolution is a significant development in the ongoing conflict and raises serious concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
