Investment firm Morphosis Capital successfully finalizes €130 million Fund II, garnering support from European Investment Fund (EIF), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and International Finance Corporation (IFC)
The European Investment Fund (EIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have joined forces with family offices such as Vybros Capital Partners and Inspire Asset Management, to invest in Morphosis Fund II. The Romanian-focused private equity firm is now the only one in the country backed by all three leading development finance institutions.
Morphosis Capital Partners, the firm behind the fund, has completed its second growth capital fund at €130 million, an amount that was oversubscribed. Andrei Gemeneanu, Managing Partner at Morphosis Capital, expressed his delight, stating that closing a fund amid macroeconomic uncertainty and political volatility is an extraordinary achievement.
The fund, which has already made investments in Romania Education Alliance, discount hypermarket chain La Cocos, and Bulgaria's EnduroSat, plans to make 2-3 new investments annually over the next three years. It will focus on investing in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in healthcare, B2B services, consumer products, retail, and niche manufacturing sectors in Romania and neighbouring countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia.
The fund targets businesses with an EBITDA of €1 million to €5 million and will deploy capital in these regions. Besides Morphosis Capital Partners, the fund's financing includes the European Investment Fund (EIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), institutional asset managers, and over €50 million from entrepreneurial capital contributed by Romanian and Western European business founders.
The EU's InvestEU Fund and Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan supported Morphosis Fund I, and the current fund continues to expand its investor base, including family offices. The support from these institutions underscores the confidence in Morphosis Capital's ability to drive growth and development in the SME sector across the region.
