Invitation extended to specialists for shaping Europe's artificial intelligence policy

The European Commission has initiated a call for evidence and a targeted questionnaire, inviting the community to share their insights and experiences on the responsible use of Generative AI in research. This move is part of the ongoing process to formulate the EU's strategy on artificial intelligence.

The call for evidence and questionnaire are essential tools for the community to contribute to the design of a strategy that supports European science and boosts EU competitiveness. They are steps towards ensuring that the European AI strategy remains responsive to the evolving needs and challenges of the research community.

The European Strategy for Artificial intelligence (AI) in Science aims to accelerate the responsible use of AI and enhance research in key areas like climate change, health, clean technologies, and more. This strategy is intended to drive innovation and boost EU competitiveness.

An updated edition of the European Research Area Forum 'Living Guidelines on the responsible use of Generative AI in research' has been published today. These guidelines aim to provide the EU research and innovation community with up-to-date guidance on responsibly embracing fast-changing AI technology.

The EU executive also plans to establish the European AI Research Council (RAISE) under the "European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science". This council will pool resources, data, and computing capacity to accelerate the responsible use of AI in science across Europe, supporting FAIR data principles, and fostering the development of AI-ready research data, tools, and services to enhance scientific AI models and their applications in research.

The strategy will lead to the creation of a European AI Research Council, known as the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE). This council is expected to attract talent and investments to fully leverage the potential of AI.

The call for evidence and the targeted questionnaire are open to the entire EU research and innovation community. The EU Commission is asking Europe's researchers and research and innovation community to contribute to the formulation of its strategy on artificial intelligence.

Scientists and researchers are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence to gain insights and make ground-breaking discoveries. The fast increasing use of AI is advancing scientific fields like astronomy, medical diagnostics, drug discovery, materials science, and climate modelling.

The call for evidence and the targeted questionnaire will remain open until 5 June 2025. Ekaterina Zaharieva, the EU's Research Commissioner, encourages the community to take part in the consultations and help design a strategy that supports European science as the bedrock of competitiveness.
