Iraq's tip results in the demolition of an amphetamine manufacturing facility in Lebanon

In a significant development in the fight against drug trafficking, a factory producing the amphetamine Captagon was destroyed in Lebanon earlier this month. The factory, discovered in Yammoune village in the eastern Bekaa Valley, was responsible for some production of Captagon, a drug that has become a major source of revenue for certain parties in neighbouring Syria.

The operation was initiated after Iraqi authorities provided information about the factory to Beirut. This security cooperation between intelligence agencies in Iraq and Lebanon led to the successful destruction of one of the largest Captagon factories in Lebanon.

Iraq's Interior Ministry made the announcement about the discovery of the factory late on Monday. The Lebanese operation against the factory took place in mid-July.

The vast majority of the world's Captagon is produced in neighbouring Syria, with some production also taking place in Lebanon. Western governments estimate that Captagon has generated billions of dollars in revenue for various parties in Syria, including former President Bashar Assad, his associates, and allies.

The destruction of the factory in Lebanon is a significant blow to the Captagon production network. Regional states are intensifying efforts to fight the drug trade, including the destruction of Captagon factories.

This joint operation between Iraq and Lebanon is a testament to the growing cooperation between regional states in the fight against drug trafficking. The discovery and destruction of the factory in Lebanon serve as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational organised crime.

As the fight against drug trafficking continues, it is hoped that more factories will be discovered and destroyed, and that the production and distribution of Captagon will be significantly reduced.
