Is qualifying work exclusive to Oscar Piastri?
McLaren's Piastri Edges Norris for Pole in Exciting Zandvoort Qualifying
In a thrilling qualifying session at the Circuit Zandvoort, McLaren's Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with a narrow margin of 0.012 seconds over teammate Lando Norris.
Piastri, who struggled with long corners earlier in the weekend, managed to reduce his deficit to Norris significantly in qualifying. He lost over two tenths in corners 9 and 10 and another tenth in the chicane, but he made up for it by setting the fastest time in high-speed Turn 3, Scheivlak, often gaining one and a half tenths there.
Norris, who set the fastest times in all three practice sessions, also faced challenges throughout the weekend. He lost time in several places where he was not at the limit, and he expressed concerns about overtaking in Zandvoort and passing his own teammate with the same equipment.
Both drivers adjusted their driving style to tackle their problem areas in qualifying. Piastri held onto a 0.012-second lead at the finish line to secure pole position, but Norris was two hundredths ahead of Piastri out of the last corner. However, Piastri nailed the exit of Turn 10 and had a 0.080-second advantage through the chicane to take the pole.
Team principal Andrea Stella reminded both drivers of the opportunity to go faster based on each other's data. Norris was happy with his laps in qualifying, despite the qualifying defeat, and mentioned the need to work on a few places and things to improve his performance. Piastri felt that this weekend required a lot of hard work and patience to find the necessary time for improvement.
Norris could not make up the larger deficit up the dunes and into Scheivlak, while Piastri reduced his deficit to Norris from Turn 9 onwards in qualifying, going from losing over four tenths to just 0.080 seconds. Piastri also set the fastest lap ever on that track during the qualifying session, securing his pole position performance at the Circuit Zandvoort itself.
With Piastri on pole and Norris starting from second, the stage is set for an exciting race on Sunday. Norris will need good strategy, magic, or exceptional tire management to overtake Piastri in the race, but fans can expect a fierce battle between the two McLaren drivers.
