Is Wood Pellet Biomass an Environmental-Friendlier Option for Utility-Scale Power Generation?
In the United States, the production of wood pellets for energy purposes has become a significant contributor to carbon emissions. According to recent data, upwards of 88 million tons of CO2 were emitted in this process.
The majority of these pellets, approximately 75 percent, are shipped across the Atlantic to be burned in the U.K. The pellets, inch-long and compressed from pine and hardwood trees, are abundant in the Southeastern region of the United States.
The gathering of wood for pellet production requires clear cutting of forests, a practice that releases CO2 that had been sequestered in the trees and soil. This release of carbon dioxide is a concern for environmentalists, as it counters the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The rise of wood pellet biomass can be traced back to 2009, when the European Union (EU) created its Renewable Energy Directive. This move encouraged the use of renewable energy sources, including wood pellets, as a means to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
In the U.S., the leading producer and seller of industrial wood pellets is the company Enviva LLC. However, no specific dominant company was found in the U.K. in the search results.
The communities living near these manufacturing centers often face constant exposure to thick smoke and toxic pollutants. This exposure has been linked to health issues, with fourteen million people in the United States living within a few miles of bioenergy facilities and potentially breathing harmful toxins and pollutants.
Seth Ginther, executive director of the United States Industrial Pellet Association, believes that wood pellet biomass is a "low-cost, low-carbon alternative." A report by Chatham House revealed that in 2019, 17.6 million tons of carbon dioxide were released from burning wood pellets in the U.K. This figure underscores the need for a balanced approach to renewable energy, one that takes into account both the potential benefits and the environmental and social costs.
