In the embattled Gaza Strip, the United Nations' Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, has issued a grave warning. Nearly one million people have no place to call home and no resources to move, as the Israeli offensive continues to escalate.

The current population of Gaza's governorate, which includes Gaza City and its surroundings, numbers close to a million people. Amidst the chaos, the Israeli defense ministry's Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) is preparing for the potential relocation of the population "for their protection" southward.

However, the Red Cross has expressed concern over any Israeli efforts to evacuate Gaza City, stating that such actions could put residents at risk. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) president, Mirjana Spoljaric, has asserted that a mass evacuation would not be safe or dignified under the current conditions, given the dire lack of shelter, healthcare, and nutrition in Gaza.

The Israeli military has declared Gaza City a "dangerous combat zone," and has halted daily pauses in fighting intended to allow limited food deliveries. This decision has further exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

The Israeli offensive has claimed at least 63,025 Palestinian lives, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. Critics within Israel have urged against pursuing the planned Gaza offensive, warning it could endanger the safety of hostages taken by Hamas during its attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians.

Residents of Gaza continue to endure daily misery. Mariam Yassine, a resident of the Sheikh Radwan area, has described her living conditions as unbearable, with her children kept up all night due to non-stop shelling. A resident of the northern Zeitoun area, Abu Mohammed Kishko, stated that the bombardments the previous night were "insane" and did not stop for a second, preventing sleep.

Reports from journalists working for AFP on the northern edge of Gaza City have detailed intense Israeli strikes in the Sabra and Zeitoun districts, and an "escalation" in the Sheikh Radwan area north of the city center. The Israeli army has also reported two of its soldiers were injured by an explosive device "during combat in the northern Gaza Strip."

As the world watches, Israel faces pressure to end its offensive in Gaza, where the United Nations has declared a famine and the majority of the population has been displaced multiple times. The plight of the people in Gaza continues to be a pressing concern for international humanitarian organisations and the global community.
