In the heart of the Middle East, the city of Gaza finds itself under relentless bombardment, as Israel launched its military offensive against Gaza City in August 2025. The operation, approved and initiated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aims to seize control of the city from Hamas.

The international community has expressed grave concerns about the situation. The International Red Cross warns that evacuating Gaza City under such circumstances would be "impossible." This warning comes as Israeli strikes have claimed at least 70 lives across the strip on Saturday, with 47 fatalities in Gaza City alone.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) predicts that around 1 million people could be forcibly displaced again. Disease is a looming threat in Gaza due to malnutrition, overcrowding, and a lack of clean water and cleaning materials. A virus causing high fever, joint pain, and diarrhea is spreading rapidly in the region.

Israel has advised civilians to leave for the south of the Palestinian enclave, but the city is already buckling under the weight of famine, disease, and displacement. In the midst of this chaos, footage from western Gaza City shows a boy covered in gray dust lying dead from another strike, blood leaking from a crater in his skull. At a bakery hit in a separate Israeli bombardment, rescuers are seen carrying away child after child from the carnage.

In an effort to alleviate the crisis, an aid flotilla carrying activists, including Greta Thunberg, set sail from Barcelona aiming to breach Israel's naval blockade and deliver humanitarian supplies. However, Israel has already intercepted two flotillas this summer, detaining and expelling the passengers.

Amidst the violence, Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, claimed to have killed Hamas spokesperson Abu Obeida in Gaza, a claim Hamas has not confirmed. Israel's military recovered the remains of two hostages, Ilan Weiss and Idan Shtivi, from the Gaza Strip in a military operation this week.

The assault on Gaza City has been declared a "dangerous combat zone" by Israel. Israel denies committing genocide, but the situation on the ground paints a different picture. On Aug. 22, Katz threatened to "open the gates of hell" on Gaza City until Hamas accepted Israel's conditions for ending the conflict.

Residents like Suleiman al-Hissi, a resident of Gaza City, are fleeing their homes in fear. Al-Hissi, who fled with his family after Israel carried out heavy strikes, shared his story with NBC News. Dr. Khalil Al-Daqran, spokesman for Gaza's Health Ministry, also shared information about the increasing number of casualties and the strain on the city's healthcare system.

As the conflict continues, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this humanitarian crisis.
