Sabine Gramlich Inaugurated as FrauenOrt NRW: A Lifetime of Activism Honoured

Sabine Gramlich, a long-time resident of Gütersloh, has been inaugurated as the FrauenOrt NRW on August 28, 2025. This prestigious title, initiated by the Women's Council NRW and funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, recognises Gramlich's significant contributions to women's rights and societal issues.

Gramlich, now in her seventies, has a history of activism that spans decades. She initiated the 'Political Night Prayer', participated in street blockades, and was actively involved in various organisations such as the Refugee Council, church women's groups, the psychiatry department of the LWL clinic, Amnesty International, and the peace movement.

City archivist Julia Kuklik traced milestones in Gramlich's life, highlighting her dedication to peace and justice, and ensuring women have a strong voice in societal debates. The application for the FrauenOrt NRW project in Gütersloh was driven by Kuklik, the city's equal opportunities commissioner Inge Trame, and Eckhard Müller from the Street Names Working Group.

The inauguration was a celebration of Gramlich's life and work, filled with music, personal memories, and historical retrospectives. Dagmar C. Weinert provided musical moments, including interpretations of songs and poems on the topic of peace. One of the songs performed was "Boundaries" by Dota Kehr, which says "I'm checking out, I want a passport where it just says 'Earth resident'."

Gramlich's sons, Peter and Rainer, expressed their gratitude to all her path companions and supporters who co-negotiated, co-sat, and co-invented with her. They thanked the many people who supported their mother during her work. Rainer Gramlich also thanked the audience, stating, "History challenged me to take responsibility, and this responsibility is never finished."

Inge Trame emphasised that Gramlich's commitment to peace and justice is a commitment and encouragement for them. The memorial plaque for Sabine Gramlich will keep her present in the cityscape and in memory, ensuring her legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Sabine Gramlich, a teacher by profession, has resided in Gütersloh since 1955. Her life and work serve as a testament to the power of individual action in bringing about positive change.
