Rot-Weiss Essen is gearing up for their next match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden next Friday, and the team is receiving a significant boost with the return of Jakob Golz to the pitch.

Four months ago, an unusual decision was made by the RWE coaching team, promoting Felix Wienand to starting goalkeeper for the last five competitive games of the year. This move was intended to give Wienand match experience and test him for the potential challenge if Golz had left RWE in the summer. However, despite the promotion, Golz remains the clear number one goalkeeper for Rot-Weiss Essen.

Golz had not played a competitive match for RWE since winning 2:0 in Sandhausen four months prior. His return to goalkeeping for Rot-Weiss Essen came on April 19, 2025, in a cup match against Borussia Dortmund. Although Golz made a strong impression, he was unable to prevent Serhou Guirassy's decisive goal. Despite this, Golz spoke after the match, expressing his confidence and enjoyment at being back on the pitch.

Uwe Koschinat, the coach of Rot-Weiss Essen, has confirmed that Golz remains the "undisputed number one". This decision is not surprising, considering Golz's impressive track record with the team. Prior to joining Rot-Weiss Essen in 2019, Golz played for Hamburger SV II.

The team is in need of a first league win to ease the pressure at the Hafenstraße. RWE narrowly missed out on an upset against Borussia Dortmund, losing 0:1. A win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden next Friday would provide a much-needed boost for the team.

Golz's contract renewal was never seriously at risk, as he wanted to stay and enter his seventh season at the Hafenstraße. Despite previous interest from Dutch Eredivisie club FC Groningen, it is unlikely that Golz will be leaving RWE. The release clause for Golz was only valid until July 5, ensuring that he would remain with the team for the remainder of the season.

Golz's return to the pitch provides a sense of stability for Rot-Weiss Essen, who have started the season with two draws. Golz's miscued throw-in did not contribute to a goal in the previous match, and fans are hopeful that his return will help the team secure their first win of the season.

As Rot-Weiss Essen prepares for their next match, the team can take comfort in the fact that they have one of the best goalkeepers in the league in Jakob Golz. Golz is confident about their performance against a Champions League participant and is ready to help the team secure a much-needed win.
