Heavy Rain and Cloudburst Cause Tragedy in Jammu and Kashmir

A series of cloudbursts and heavy rainfall have hit various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to tragic incidents and disruptions in normal life.

On Saturday, August 30, a cloudburst hit the Rajgarh area of Ramban district, triggering flash floods. The incident caused damage to a house and a school in the Natna area. Unfortunately, at least 11 people, including seven of a family, lost their lives in two incidents of cloudburst and landslide triggered by heavy rains in remote villages of Reasi and Ramban districts. One person is reported missing.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for Ramban, Rajouri, Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Kathua, and other districts, warning of very heavy rainfall for today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts isolated heavy rainfall to continue over Jammu and Kashmir from August 30 to September 2, with light to moderate rainfall predicted in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand for the next four days.

The Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, and Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta immediately rushed to the site of the cloudburst and landslides. They were accompanied by personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Quick Response Team (QRT). A search and rescue operation has been launched in the Ramban district to provide immediate relief to the victims.

Efforts are being made to provide immediate relief to the families of the victims in the Ramban district. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is chairing a meeting to review the situation in the valley amid incessant rains. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is in constant touch with Ramban District Collector Mohammad Alyas Khan regarding the cloudburst and landslides in the Rajgarh area.

In a statement, Singh wrote that rescue operations are ongoing, and every possible assistance is being provided. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ramban, Arun Gupta, is trying to trace the missing person.

Heavy rainfall is predicted over Jammu and Kashmir from August 30 to September 2. The cloudburst disrupted normal life in the Natna area of Ramban district.
