JED starts distributing 109,000 no-cost prepaid electric meters
Jos Electricity Distribution Company Launches Free Meter Installation for Customers
The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) has commenced the installation of 109,000 free prepaid meters as part of its Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) Metering Scheme. The meters, which belong to JED, will be installed in the states of Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe.
The installation process, which began on Monday, will focus on providing meters for existing unmetered customers and replacing faulty meters only on Band A feeders. It is important to note that this scheme does not cover new connections.
Each customer will receive a complete installation kit comprising the metre, User Interface Unit (UIU), and a metres card. The advanced technology-equipped metres offer features such as automated token uploads, geo-lock functionality, and real-time consumption monitoring. They also send alerts when tokens are exhausted or in cases of prolonged non-purchase.
Customers are urged to cooperate fully with JED staff during metre validation and profiling visits. It is crucial to note that any payments made to staff or agents for meters or installations on Band A feeders are at the customer's own risk. JED will not be liable for any losses incurred.
The DISREP meters are completely free of charge. However, customers who validate their debt profile may be eligible for discount offers under the ongoing debt validation and discount promo. Those who choose to repay their debts in instalments within three years will enjoy a 25% discount. Customers who clear their total debt in full are offered a 30% discount.
The aim of the initiative is to improve service delivery and bridge the metering gap in Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, and Plateau states. The metres also come with tamper and bypass detection with instant notifications sent to JED PLC for any interference.
Customers who receive meters under the DISREP Metering Scheme are required to visit the nearest JED office to validate their debt profile. They should not make any payments to staff or agents for meters or installations on Band A feeders.
