João Almeida and Jonas Vingegaard's potential contention for the 2025 Vuelta a España and the importance of a decisive victory for Vingegaard in the Grand Tour Race tournament analysis.

In the ongoing Vuelta a España, João Almeida is chasing Jonas Vingegaard for the coveted red jersey. The Danish rider currently holds a 48-second lead over the Portuguese racer, a gap that could be decisive in the final stages of the race.

Vingegaard's victory at the Vuelta would not only secure his place in cycling history but also provide the confidence needed to challenge for a third Tour de France title and dethrone Tadej Pogacar in future races. The rider's impressive performance in 2023, where he finished first at the Tour and second at the Vuelta, was marred by his loss at the 2025 Tour to Pogacar's teammate Almeida.

Almeida's loss of 30 seconds to Vingegaard at Valdezcaray on stage 9 was attributed to the "surprise factor." If Sunday's medium mountain stage in Galicia results in another breakaway, Almeida and Vingegaard will enter the final week with the current 48-second gap.

The race's final stages present several opportunities for both riders. Vingegaard has a chance to win the Vuelta at the summit finish to Alto de El Morredero, the 27.2km individual time trial in Vallodolid, and the final mountain stage to Bola del Mundo. Almeida's diesel engine and gradual build-up method of attacking climbs make stage 17 seem unlikely, but he could thrive in the race against the clock on stage 18.

Stage 17, stage 18, and stage 20 are the three stages that could potentially provide an opportunity for Almeida to win the Vuelta. UAE's Sports Manager Matxin Joxean Fernández suggested that they won't want to wait until Bola del Mundo to try and overtake Vingegaard in the fight for red.

The equation for UAE Team Emirates-XRG is to have one good day for Almeida that coincides with a poor day for Vingegaard to win the Vuelta. Almeida has shown three one-week WorldTour stage race victories this season alone, but winning a Grand Tour is a whole different beast.

If Vingegaard's winning gap is less than a minute to Almeida, the shine of the red jersey may be dampened. Almeida could yet come back and defeat Vingegaard, which would be the ultimate statement for UAE if Pogacar's climbing domestique was able to beat his biggest rival at a Grand Tour.

The race for the red jersey at the Vuelta a España is shaping up to be a thrilling contest between two of the sport's top riders. With three stages left, every second counts as both Almeida and Vingegaard fight tooth and nail for the coveted prize.
