In October 2024, the spotlight once again shone on John Ford's timeless western, "Fort Apache". First released in 1948, this film marked the beginning of Ford's famous cavalry trilogy.

Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Little Bighorn, "Fort Apache" presents a radically different version of the historical event compared to Raoul Walsh's "They Died with Their Boots On". The film, directed by Ford, stars Henry Fonda, John Wayne, Shirley Temple, and Pedro ArmendΓ‘riz.

Interestingly, "Fort Apache" was the last film Henry Fonda made before he was greylisted due to his left-wing political activism. John Wayne, a symbol of the western genre, also stars in this classic.

Despite initial reservations from critics, "Fort Apache" has since secured a place among John Ford's best works. The film's outdoor scenes featuring cavalry traversing Monument Valley are particularly striking.

The 4K remaster of "Fort Apache" made its way to cinemas after its victory at the Berlinale 2024 as part of the Berlinale Classics program. However, the exact company or distributor responsible for the theatrical release remains unspecified. The restored film premiered at the 2025 Berlinale.

Today, "Fort Apache" is available for audiences to enjoy on the website Play. The film, along with many other titles, forms part of Play's catalog.

It's worth noting that during the filming of "Fort Apache", Shirley Temple was pregnant. Reports suggest that Ford and Temple did not get along well during this time.

The Gray List, a list of personalities suspected of being sympathetic to leftist ideologies, was in effect during the production of the film. This list, milder than the blacklist, resulted in social ostracism, lack of job offers, and in some cases, contract termination for those on it.

The western genre, of which "Fort Apache" is a significant part, is considered a classic in Hollywood. Ford, known as the most brilliant director of the western genre, certainly left his mark with this film.
