John Mateer shatters Oklahoma records in a triumphant debut, guiding the 18th-ranked Sooners to a decisive 35-3 victory over Illinois State.
In the opening game of the season, the Oklahoma Sooners showcased their prowess, defeating Illinois State with a commanding performance. The final score was 45-3, a testament to Oklahoma's dominant display.
Several players stood out in the game, with Deion Burks leading the way. Burks had an impressive outing, catching seven passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Joining him in the offensive onslaught was Jaren Kanak, who added five catches for 90 yards, and Keontez Lewis, who scored two touchdowns on nine receptions for 119 yards.
On the ground, Oklahoma managed 103 yards rushing on 32 carries. This is an area they will need to improve as they face a tougher schedule ahead, starting with No. 14 Michigan on Sept. 6.
Defensively, Oklahoma was equally impressive, allowing only 151 total yards, including a mere 34 yards passing. The Sooners' stingy defense was aided by the absence of Zac Alley, who left to become the defensive coordinator at West Virginia. His departure paved the way for Head Coach Brent Venables to step in as the defensive play-caller.
Venables' impact was evident, as the Sooners' defense held Illinois State to just three points, all of which came from a solitary field goal. Wright Wenkers, Illinois State's leading rusher, managed only 50 yards on seven carries.
Oklahoma's offensive performance in their first game under offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was particularly noteworthy. The Sooners racked up 495 yards, with quarterback John Mateer passing for 392 yards and three touchdowns in his debut.
Elsewhere, Illinois State hosted Morehead State on Sept. 6, with the details of that game not yet available. The Sooners will look to build on their strong start when they face Michigan next week, a game that promises to be a challenging test for both teams.
