JPMorgan Chase to Launch Digital Bank in Germany
In a significant move, JPMorgan Chase, one of the major retail banks in the US serving over 85 million customers, has announced plans to launch a digital bank in Germany. The bank, which has a long history in the country, having opened its first representative office in Berlin in 1924, will officially inaugurate its location in Berlin by the end of 2025.
The digital banking offering, set to be introduced during the second quarter of 2026, aims to provide a customized service tailored to the German market. Mark O'Donovan, CEO of International Consumer Banking at JPMorgan Chase, stated that the bank sees strong demand in Germany for a digital bank built on trust, innovation, and global experience.
The initial offering will include a savings account, due to Germany's strong savings culture, growing customer demand, and an innovative market. Bygradually expanding the services, the bank hopes to help consumers maximize the potential of their money.
Daniel Llano Manibardo, Head of Germany International Consumer Banking, will lead the launch and will be represented in Germany. Manibardo is a former ING Germany executive and brings a wealth of experience to the role. He stated that Chase will combine digital technology with the strength and experience of a world-class bank.
Chase is designed to be completely digital, simple, and personal. It offers a wide range of financial services, including checking accounts, credit cards, loans, and investment advice. JPMorgan Chase currently employs over 900 people in Frankfurt and across Germany, and with the launch of Chase, these numbers are expected to grow.
Germany is the second European market for Chase, following its launch in the UK. In the UK, JPMorgan Chase now serves over 2.5 million customers. The bank has big ambitions for the German market, but also respects the high expectations German customers have of their bank.
