In a surprising turn of events, the roof of a Rewe supermarket in Lauchringen, a town located near the Swiss border, collapsed on a Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred despite the recent renovation of the market, which reopened in mid-August.

The fire department was quick to respond, evacuating the market and turning off the electricity, water, and gas as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, only 26 people were in the store at the time, and the deputy commander of the Lauchringen fire department, Mike König, stated that the incident could have been much worse.

The collapse resulted in four injuries, two of which are severe. Rescue teams are using thermal imaging cameras to search for casualties under the rubble. The identities of the victims are yet to be confirmed.

The solar panel system on the roof was made inoperable to eliminate any potential danger. Investigators are likely to deploy an expert to determine the cause of the roof collapse, but the specific construction works carried out, including any work on the roof, are currently unclear.

The collapsed ceiling panels and insulation material included inflated balloons and a mirror that was usually above the register. The goods, especially the refrigerated and frozen ones, are likely to spoil due to the incident.

The trading company Rewe has not made any statement regarding the renovation by late evening. The police have secured the building and cordoned it off, and a rescue helicopter was called to the scene, but it did not transport any of the seriously injured to a clinic.

The Rewe supermarket, located in the city of Waldshut-Tiengen, is a significant part of the community. The volunteer firefighters estimate the damage to the building to be in the millions.
