Kazakhstan Planning to Spend Around $11.5 Billion on Renovation of Power Sector Infrastructure

In a significant move, Kazakhstan has unveiled plans to construct a 1-gigawatt combined-cycle gas turbine plant in the Turkistan Region. This announcement is part of a larger initiative to launch 29 energy generation projects with a combined capacity of 7.3 gigawatts (GW) by 2029.

Among the most significant undertakings are the transition of Almaty's CHP-2 and CHP-3 plants from coal to natural gas. The transition is expected to boost Kazakhstan's installed generation capacity significantly.

Asylzhan Musin, the director of the department for electric power development, provided updates on these developments during a press briefing at the Central Communications Service. He also revealed that a 160-megawatt plant will be developed at MAEK LLP in the Mangystau Region.

The 15 new projects, including these, are expected to introduce an additional 5,259 MW of generation capacity across Kazakhstan. A significant portion of the funds, 4.4 trillion tenge (approximately US$8.15 billion), will be directed toward these new energy generation projects.

Of the total investment package, 1.7 trillion tenge (US$3.15 billion) will be allocated to 14 projects aimed at modernizing existing power assets. These modernization projects will add 2,050 megawatts (MW) of upgraded capacity.

The implementation of these projects is expected to reduce the overall wear and tear of power plants by 17% within the next five years. The remaining projects and their respective funding details were not specified in the provided paragraph.

The companies involved in these projects include local Kazakhstani firms and international energy corporations, but specific company names are not publicly detailed. These updates are part of the national project Modernization of the Energy and Utilities Sector.

The new projects are expected to support Kazakhstan's economic development and technological growth. Moreover, 700 megawatts of maneuverable capacities will be introduced across the Atyrau, Aktobe, and Zhambyl regions, enhancing the stability and flexibility of the national power grid.

The total cost of these projects is approximately US$11.48 billion. Information about these updates was reported by the Ministry of Energy press service. These developments are a testament to Kazakhstan's commitment to sustainable and efficient energy solutions.
