Kazakhstan's 'Suyinschi' Coin Honors Ancient Hospitality Tradition
Kazakhstan's rich cultural heritage is reflected in its unique hospitality traditions. One such tradition, 'Sarkyt', involves giving food to guests to take home after a feast. This custom, dating back to nomadic times, embodies the deep warmth and generosity of Kazakh culture. To honor this tradition, the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a commemorative coin called 'Suyinschi' in 2018.
The coin is part of a series dedicated to Kazakhstan's cultural heritage, showcasing traditions like 'Shashu' and 'Bata'. 'Shashu' is an ancient custom where sweets and coins are thrown to guests on joyful occasions, symbolizing happiness and prosperity for their own homes. This tradition is often performed by an older woman during weddings, housewarmings, or when sharing good news.
'Bata' is a Kazakh blessing that passes on wisdom, culture, and tradition, guiding a person in difficult times. Another gift-giving tradition, 'Korimdik', involves giving a gift to someone when they show their joy or something new. This practice is common among multiple ethnic groups in Kazakhstan.
The 'Suyinschi' coin commemorates the Kazakh tradition of sharing good news, often followed by a small gift or gesture of gratitude. These customs, like 'Shashu', 'Suyinschi', and 'Korimdik', reflect the deep warmth and wisdom of a centuries-old culture, preserving Kazakhstan's rich heritage for future generations.
