Kenya Holds Inaugural Road Safety Excellence Awards to Celebrate Highway Safety Pioneers

The Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) recently hosted the AA Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards, an event aimed at celebrating progress, exchanging ideas, and fostering a stronger culture of safety on Kenyan roads.

The gala, attended by senior government officials, AA Kenya Governing Council members, and grassroots safety advocates from across the country, featured a variety of categories including Driver Safety & Wellness, Road Safety Champion of the year, Road Safety Innovation, Policy & Compliance, Insurance company of the year, Motor Financier, Community engagement & Motor Club of the year, and EV Adoption Champion, Traffic Base Commander of the year, Matatu Sacco, Bodaboda Sacco, Learning Institutions, and Digital Taxi Operator of the year.

One of the highlights of the event was the Road Safety Corner, where attendees signed a pledge to be committed and responsible road users. The pledge board featured Ten Road Safety Commandments, each displaying key messages on safe road practices. This engaging activity encouraged meaningful conversations and strengthened the importance of fostering a strong road safety culture.

CEO of AA Kenya Francis Theuri expressed that the awards aim to recognise and promote outstanding commitment to road safety in Kenya. Elijah Mwangi, State Department for Sports Principal Secretary, emphasised that road safety involves behaviour, culture, and daily choices.

George Njao, NTSA Director General, announced plans to reintroduce alcohol testing (Alcoblow) and roll out more highway surveillance cameras to combat the high number of road accidents in the country. He stated that the majority of road crash victims in Kenya are between 18 and 35 years old, highlighting the need for stronger partnerships, improved education, and holding drivers accountable to reverse this trend.

The AA Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards encourage a collaborative and data-driven approach to saving lives. The event aimed to support the goals of Kenya's National Road Safety Action Plan and the UN Decade for Action for Road Safety.

The active participation from winners, who expressed pride in being recognised for their contributions to road safety, added to the success of the event. This year's awards gala was a testament to the commitment of individuals and organisations in promoting road safety in Kenya.
