KiJuPa shares results from a poll involving 2,250 youth participants
The Marburg Children and Youth Parliament (KiJuPa) recently conducted a survey of 2,250 young people in the city, gathering insights on a wide range of topics including Politics & Participation, School & Education, Transportation & Mobility, Leisure, Media & Digitalization, Safety, Discrimination, and Future.
The survey, launched in the summer of 2023, was supported by Philipps University and evaluated by Prof. Dr. Ivo ZuΜchner from Educational Science and Philipp Klingler from Political Didactics. The results can be viewed at www.kijupa-unsere-webseite/umfrage.
One of the key findings reveals that 67.9% of students are dependent on public transportation, with this dependency increasing as they live further from the city center. Notably, students expressed a desire for more buses, fewer parental taxis, and clear regulations for traffic calming and traffic safety around schools.
In the area of school & education, young people expressed a desire for better toilets and a stronger focus on career orientation, financial education, and mental health. They also voiced their concern for more information on the topic of security and data protection regarding social media.
Moreover, the survey revealed that around 36% of students feel insecure to somewhat insecure while cycling on the road. However, most young people are satisfied to very satisfied with their home internet access.
The idea for the survey came after Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the Marburg KiJuPa. Young people also suggested that local politics should be more visible and interesting for them, and there should be a continuous dialogue between politics and youth. They proposed that guests from politics and administration should be invited to more attractive lessons on local politics.
In conclusion, the young people of Marburg, specifically the students in grades 5 to 13 who took part in the survey, have expressed their concerns and suggestions for the city's future. They are advocating for a safer and more informed digital environment, better school facilities, and improved transportation and mobility options. Their voices serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and stakeholders in shaping Marburg's future.
