"Lack of Disclosure"
The political crisis in France, which has been simmering since the summer of 2024, has intensified with the addition of a government crisis. The resignation of Prime Minister François Bayro has further complicated the situation, leaving President Emmanuel Macron standing alone at the helm.
Bayro's 'It's me or chaos' argument did not resonate with MPs or TV viewers, and his resignation has been met with public anger on the streets, demanding Macron's resignation as well. The opposition did not extend the minority government contract for Bayro, and his loss of trust from both MPs and the public led to a vote of confidence that he could not win.
After Bayro's resignation, Macron appointed Sébastien Lecornu, the former Defense Minister, as the new Prime Minister on September 9, 2025. Lecornu, a loyal follower of Macron, has held various governmental positions since 2017. However, there is no immediate evidence that this change has altered the traditionally centralized and somewhat monarchic style of power distribution in the French Republic. Macron's choice of Lecornu, a close ally, rather reinforces the president's control over the government rather than decentralizing power.
The newspaper Debate, an independent, left-wing, and opinionated daily newspaper, has been arguing and presenting opposing positions since its founding in 1979, part of the broad left spectrum. The situation in France is unpleasant, with the Republic heavily indebted and high interest rates on new bonds. There is no clear candidate to replace Bayro as Prime Minister, and the political crisis has intensified since his resignation.
The institutions of the French Republic, dating back to General de Gaulle's time, are inadequate for handling current political challenges. The power distribution, reminiscent of a monarchy, is outdated and unable to facilitate a democratic debate on legitimate demands. This outdated system has contributed to the ongoing crisis, as the public's demands for change are not being met.
In this volatile political landscape, the future of France remains uncertain. The public is demanding change, and the institutions of the Republic are struggling to adapt. Only time will tell how this crisis will unfold and whether Macron and his government will be able to navigate these challenging waters.
