A new investment fund, the Next Narrative Africa Fund, is set to revolutionise the African film and audiovisual industry. The fund, established by Nigerian media production company Next Narrative Africa in partnership with HEVA Fund, a Kenyan-based investment firm, aims to raise and deploy a total of $40 million over the next four years.

Since 2016, major players like Netflix have invested approximately $178 million in film content production across the continent. This new fund presents a significant opportunity for further investment in Africa's growing film industry.

The Next Narrative Africa Fund will focus on commercially viable projects with global appeal, primarily produced in Africa. The fund targets projects with budgets ranging from $1 million to $5 million per project. Akunna Cook, CEO and Founder of Next Narrative Africa, expressed excitement about supporting creatives who aspire to entertain, inspire, and usher in a new narrative about Africa and its people.

The fund will invest not only in films but also in the broader film and television ecosystem, including infrastructure development. This comprehensive approach is expected to foster a thriving industry that can compete on a global scale.

An advisory board will guide the Next Narrative Africa Fund. The board consists of entertainment executives, filmmakers, film distributors, and experts in narrative change. While the search results do not provide specific information about all the members, it is known that Darcy Heusel of Neon, Areej Noor of Statement Films, Dominic Buchanan of Home Team, and Chin Okeke of Misan Partners are notable members.

The fund's focus is on projects that tackle themes such as gender and racial equity, democracy and governance, climate change, health, and inclusive economic growth. This focus aligns with the growing interest in socially relevant content in the industry.

Initial investments are anticipated within the same year, with the fund targeting a first close in the first quarter of 2025 and a final close by the end of the fourth quarter of 2025. The success stories of Nigeria's Nollywood and South Africa's film industries, which have recently captured significant attention, topping box office charts and generating substantial returns for investors, serve as a testament to the potential of the African film industry.

With the Next Narrative Africa Fund, African filmmakers stand to benefit from substantial investment, guidance from industry experts, and the opportunity to tell compelling stories that resonate globally. The fund promises to be a game-changer in the African film and audiovisual industry.
