In the heart of 19th-century New York, the area around Five Points was filled with Italian immigrants living in squalid conditions. Amidst the chaos, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of Mother Cabrini, the first American-born saint.
Born frail and given a short life expectancy, Cabrini defied all odds. In 1880, she founded the "Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus" and later, in 1881, the Pope recognised her missionary work.
Cabrini faced little support from the Catholic Church or city officials, including Mayor Gould and his followers who openly displayed racism towards the Italian immigrants. Undeterred, she opened an orphanage for Italian children in the Five Points neighbourhood, once a notorious crime hub.
Despite the challenges, Cabrini set her sights on opening a hospital next. Her relentless spirit and dedication to her cause are the focus of the upcoming film, "The Pope's Envoy." Directed by Alejandro GΓ³mez Monteverde, the film is a cinematic tribute to this extraordinary clergyman.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Cristiana Dell'Anna, David Morse, Romana Maggiora Vergano, among others. It is 142 minutes long and has been produced or released in Germany by Warner Bros. Germany.
Martin Schwarz, a film editor who studied journalism and theater studies at the FU and was a film editor at the city magazine zitty for 20 years, explores the city and remains loyal to the cinema, also for the city magazine tipBerlin. In his latest piece, he delves into the themes of racism, integration, and emancipation portrayed in "The Pope's Envoy."
Interestingly, the behaviour of New York's city officials in the film mirrors current US politics, with prejudices against foreign populations. This timely portrayal serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality.
"The Pope's Envoy" is set to be released on 11.9. It is a must-watch for anyone interested in history, social issues, or simply a compelling story about an extraordinary woman's journey.
