Latest Figures on Electric Vehicle Sales for Q3, 2024

In a significant shift in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Chinese automaker BYD emerged as the leading EV seller in China during the third quarter of 2023. The company sold an impressive 443,000 EVs, narrowly missing Tesla's global third-quarter sales by just 20,000 vehicles.

BYD's dominance in the Chinese market is a testament to its growing popularity and commitment to sustainable transportation. The company's success comes as other major players in the industry also report strong sales figures.

For instance, Tesla maintained its position as the world's leading EV manufacturer, selling 463,000 electric vehicles in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Volkswagen sold 190,000 EVs, placing it second in China, while Geely edged out Volkswagen with sales of 197,000 EVs, securing the third spot.

Other Chinese automakers also posted impressive sales figures. XPeng sold 47,000 EVs, Chinese automaker AION (GAC) sold 102,000 electric vehicles, and the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture sold 170,000 EVs. Nio sold 62,000 EVs, and newcomer VinFast sold 22,000 EVs in the third quarter.

However, not all traditional automakers have kept pace with their dedicated EV counterparts. Ford sold 32,000 EVs, Toyota sold 35,000 EVs, and Honda, Renault, and Nissan each recorded modest sales of around 20,000 units. BMW sold 104,000 vehicles, with its iX and i4 models resonating with buyers looking for premium electric options.

Stellantis and General Motors each sold 65,000 EVs, showing steady but unspectacular progress. Chinese automaker Changan delivered 73,000 EVs in the third quarter.

Known for its affordable, compact EVs like the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, SGMW targets budget-conscious consumers, especially in urban areas. Leapmotor sold 60,000 EVs in the third quarter, and Mercedes-Benz sold 61,000 EVs during the same period.

Hyundai-Kia sold 115,000 EVs in the third quarter, struggling to keep pace with competitors. BYD's achievement of the highest electric car sales in China in the third quarter is a clear indication of the company's growing global presence. The company is also gaining traction in Europe and other regions.

As the EV market continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how these companies fare in the coming quarters. The race for global EV dominance is far from over.
