In a significant move against cybercrime, Europol, along with Italian police and other international law enforcement agencies, has taken down an illegal darknet marketplace. The operation, named "Operation Babylon," spanned over a period of two years.

The marketplace, which reportedly had approximately 14,000 users from various parts of the world, provided a convenient platform for laundering funds due to its use of Bitcoins. It is suspected that the seized Bitcoin wallets, holding around €1,000,000 in funds, were likely used for transactions on the illegal darknet marketplace.

The marketplace allegedly sold a variety of illicit items, including child pornography, drugs, weapons, and other illegal goods. It is worth noting that the criminal world parallel to the Internet, while a small part of overall Web communications, is significant in facilitating such illegal activities.

Michele Prestipino, a public prosecutor involved in the investigation, stated that accessing such darknet communities is extremely difficult. The investigation into the darknet marketplace is not limited to Italian authorities, as it was a joint effort with Europol and the FBI.

The marketplace, which accepted Bitcoins as a payment method, is no longer operational. However, it is important to note that the investigation into the darknet marketplace is considered a starting point, implying further investigations may be ongoing.

Interestingly, the suspect believed by authorities to be the founder of the illegal darknet marketplace, who was active under the screen name "Pablo Escobar," is not mentioned in the provided search results. Instead, around 210 of the users were drug dealers, including a notable Italian drug dealer known as "Pablo Escobar" online.

The mafia's potential involvement in the illegal goods business through the marketplace is a possibility, but further investigations are required to confirm this. The operation against the darknet marketplace is just one example of the ongoing fight against cybercrime.

No arrests have been made in connection with the operation so far. The seizure of the darknet marketplace serves as a reminder of the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrime and maintain the safety of the digital world.
