Law enforcement officers lead reporters to a protest and impose a restraining order
In a concerning turn of events for press freedom in Germany, two journalists were arrested at the sidelines of a Palestine solidarity demonstration at Berlin's Alexanderplatz on Wednesday.
Ryad Aref, a journalist covering the event, did not receive any explanation and was told that everything would come in the mail later, implying he received a summons. The authority responsible for imposing the payment on Aref without a court trial was the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Bundesamt fΓΌr Verfassungsschutz).
Aref confirmed that an officer told him to leave the square, but he was still taken away despite showing his press pass. The officer later told Aref: "You can film anywhere in Germany, just not in Berlin." This instruction is not allowed, as only a court can impose such a ban.
Meanwhile, Zaira Biagini, another journalist covering the demonstration, was approached by two officers, led away, and her press pass was visible. In a video, Biagini is later shown surrounded by about seven officers near a police car. On her Instagram account, she stated that the officers demanded she hand over the photos she had taken during the demo, which she refused to do. After a warning and identification, she was free to go.
The Berlin police have stated that they are not aware of the incident mentioned. However, videos and photos of the arrests have circulated on social media, raising concerns about police aggression against press representatives covering demonstrations with a Palestine focus.
Alaa Mohsen Qreiqei, a 29-year-old photojournalist from Gaza, discusses life-threatening reporting in the war. Kitty O'Brien, a journalist, was repeatedly punched in the face by a police officer during a demonstration, adding to the growing concerns about press freedom.
Israel is escalating its crackdown on Palestinian journalists in the West Bank, which further highlights the importance of supporting press freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide. The incidents in Berlin serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice.
