Law enforcement officials reject allegations that they observed Rashid firing at two young individuals.
In the Kibera Law Courts, a hearing is currently underway for Ahmed Rashid, who is facing murder charges for the killing of two youths in Eastleigh in 2017. The prosecution has lined up more than 50 witnesses in the case, with 10 having testified so far, including five officers from the Special Police Unit for Intelligence and Vigilance (SPIV).
On the day in question, Corporal Gideon Kibet Ruto and Robert Rono, both members of SPIV, were on duty with three colleagues, all in plain clothes but armed. Rono, however, admitted that he had not returned his firearm to the armoury as required by procedure on the day in question.
Wilfred Omboga, another SPIV officer, was on patrol duty from 6pm to 6am on March 30, 2017, and was later called by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) about thugs in Eastleigh. Omboga was armed with two weapons - an AK-47 rifle and a pistol. Upon reaching the scene, he testified that he found the road closed with a large crowd. He fired four shots in the air to control the crowd, but when the road was cleared, he found two youths, who were members of the Gaza gang, already gunned down.
Rono denied that his firearm had been used in the killings, despite acknowledging Rashid as his senior. The officers testified that they did not witness Rashid shoot the two young men. However, both the OCS and Ahmed Rashid were present at the scene in Eastleigh.
No information was provided about the role or actions of the other officers mentioned in earlier bullet points during the incident in question. It is also unclear about the identities of the 50 officers of the special police unit for intelligence and precaution at the time when Ahmed Rashid was charged.
Ahmed Rashid is being represented by lawyers led by Danstan Omari and Stanley Kinyanjui. The hearing continues today.
It is known that the Gaza gang was previously known for killing two police officers and terrorising residents in Eastleigh. Omboga stated that he left with his colleagues to Eastleigh First Avenue after the incident, finding the road closed with a large crowd. The case is a significant one in the fight against crime and terrorism in Eastleigh.
