Law enforcement oversees gun and cannabis prohibition at Offenbach's Christmas fair
With the festive season fast approaching, the city of Offenbach has announced a series of safety measures to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all visitors at its Christmas markets.
Effective from October 31, 2024, a new weapon law will be enforced at public events, including the Offenbach Christmas market. This law prohibits carrying knives, weapons, or dangerous objects at these events. The aim, as stated by Ordnungsdezernent Paul-Gerhard Weiß, is to provide visitors with a sense of safety and security.
In addition to the weapon ban, the city will also implement a cannabis consumption ban. This ban is part of a broader focus on protecting the health, particularly of children, at the Christmas markets. The cannabis consumption ban will be enforced through a temporary general decree and will extend to cover the entire duration of the markets.
The authorities cooperating to ensure safety at the Offenbach Christmas market throughout the season include the fire departments from Heusenstamm and Rembrücken, local emergency services, and the central control center of the Offenbach district. These entities work closely together for rapid response and preventive measures.
The joint patrols of the city and state police will cover six hours daily and will be further increased during the Christmas season. In addition, random checks by security authorities are now legally possible, making implementation easier. The city and state police have the right to intervene in case of cannabis consumption violations at the Christmas markets.
Ordnungsdezernent Weiß considers the extension of the cannabis consumption ban to be appropriate for preventive reasons. Frank Weber, head of the Offenbach Ordnungsamt, echoes this sentiment, stating that the authorities are working hand in hand to ensure maximum safety in the city.
The security measures for the Christmas markets will not be limited to the main market in the Offenbach city center. The cannabis consumption ban will also be applied to the Christmas markets in the neighborhoods of Bieber, Bürgel, and Rumpenheim. The city and state police will continue to show increased presence at these markets to monitor the weapon ban and the cannabis consumption ban.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has urged the states to consistently enforce the weapon ban. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe environment for all visitors. The cooperation between the city and state police has been intensified since 2023, with the authorities working together to ensure maximum safety and security at the Christmas markets in Offenbach.
In conclusion, the Offenbach Christmas markets are set to be a safe and enjoyable experience for all, with a range of comprehensive safety measures in place. Visitors can look forward to a secure and festive atmosphere this holiday season.
